Startups vs big companies: where to point your search

Compensation shape, learning speed, and risk look completely different at a 30-person startup and a 30,000-person company. Choose deliberately.

The startups vs big companies question is really a question about what you are optimizing for right now: cash, learning, title, stability, or ownership. Each size class pays in a different currency, and pointing your job search at the wrong one wastes months discovering the mismatch one interview loop at a time.

What startups actually offer

Scope you would wait years for elsewhere, direct access to decisions, equity with real upside and real risk, and processes you get to build instead of inherit. The cost is volatility: budgets move, roles reshape, and the safety rails are thinner. Startup-heavy hiring lives disproportionately on Ashby and Lever, which is why the source badge on a listing is a rough size signal all by itself.

What big companies actually offer

Higher cash floors, functioning infrastructure, named-brand credibility that compounds on a resume, and the ability to change jobs without changing employers. The cost is speed: decisions travel further, and your work sits further from the outcome. Their openings skew toward SmartRecruiters and Workable across general industry.

The middle is underrated

Companies between roughly fifty and five hundred people often combine the best of both: enough traction to pay properly, enough openness that your work is visible. They are also the segment least likely to promote listings on the big boards, which makes them exactly the companies a source first search surfaces best; that dynamic is the core of the hidden job market.

Point the search deliberately

Decide the currency first, then filter for it. On Unlisted the six ATS networks skew differently by company size and industry, categories span far beyond tech as shown in industries hiring at the source, and a shortlist per size class keeps the comparison honest. The wrong size offer you decline gracefully is cheap. The wrong size job you take is not.
